Horseback Riding Tour in Stafafell – Iceland
A horseback riding tour through Iceland is an invitation to a world of rugged landscapes, glacial rivers, and a wild coastline best experienced from horseback. Far off the beaten track, in a region where humans are merely visitors and nature remains the unwavering foreground. During this trip, we’ll traverse southeastern Iceland, passing through canyons of extraordinary color, vast valleys, and the black beaches of the Atlantic. Each day brings different light, different views, and different emotions. If you dream of horseback riding where the horizon seems endless, this tour was created with you in mind.
We’ll explore areas beyond the reach of mass tourism, moving in the rhythm of Icelandic nature and in the saddle of extraordinary Icelandic horses. There will be time for active riding, gallops along the beach, but also moments of silence and space that will remain in your memory for a long time.
Our base will be a farm in Stafafell, located in the heart of the region, from where each day we set off on different, varied routes leading through mountains, canyons, glacial rivers and to the ocean.

Expedition
After meeting in Reykjavík, we set off towards southeast Iceland. The journey itself is a prelude to the adventure – along the way, we stop at some of the most famous attractions in the south of the island, including the impressive Skógafoss waterfall. In the evening, we arrive at Stafafell, where over dinner we meet the hosts who have been caring for the atmosphere of this place for four generations, which will become our base for the next few days.
The first days of the tour allow us to gradually immerse ourselves in the Icelandic landscape: we set off for the golden Hvannagil Canyon, ride along the Jökulsá glacial river, and head towards the coast of Lón Bay, experiencing wide open spaces and the smooth ride of the tölt. The next day is dedicated to exploring the interior – mountain slopes, canyons, and streams showcasing the full spectrum of Icelandic nature.
One day we traverse the eastern edge of the region, riding along the beach separating the bay from the ocean. It’s a dynamic ride surrounded by wind, waves, and wildlife. Another day, we cross a glacial river and a route leading to spectacular, multi-colored rock formations with a wide variety of terrain.
The tour culminates with a trip to the western end of the bay – riding along the foothills of an iconic, sharply defined mountain surrounded by black sand beaches. Taking advantage of low tide, we ride over exposed ocean floor. For those interested, this is an excellent opportunity for a long, leisurely gallop. The return journey takes you through a picturesque pass with a vast panorama of the region.
On the last day, after breakfast, we return to Reykjavík. Along the way, we stop at South Iceland’s most famous attractions: the glacier lagoon, black sand beach, and waterfalls. Arrival in the capital is scheduled for around 5:00 PM.
